In February, Ziplines Education raised $6.4M in funding and AI training took center stage. Coding bootcamps integrated genAI training into their curricula and created new AI short courses for upskilling.
March saw a major push for skills-based hiring with a Biden administration executive order prioritizing apprenticeships in federal hiring. An Indeed report showed that 52% of U.S. job postings no longer required a degree. And Skillshare acquired Superpeer.
Bootcamps were busy fundraising in April! HyperionDev raised $5M, Modal secured $25M, and startups like PETE and NextWork received significant funding.
May was all about partnerships — Merit America and Resilient Coders secured $18M in grants, while Canada's Upskill Initiative funded tuition for bootcamp students. Level Effect announced a pathway to earn college credit, and PowerToFly acquired Skillscrush.
In June, Code Crew received a $1M grant from Tennessee, and Pluralsight provided $2M in grants to nonprofits like CodePath and Year Up. New partnerships & scholarships from Flatiron School, App Academy, Tech Elevator, and Claim Academy expanded opportunities for career changers. Chegg Skills (formerly Thinkful) announced a pivot to enterprise training.
The White House allocated $244M to modernize registered apprenticeships in July, and the Dept. of Commerce awarded $19.5M to launch the South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub with local coding bootcamps like 4Geeks Academy. edX filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
August highlighted the continued impact and growth of coding bootcamps, with the emphasis on how grads land higher-paying jobs in an evolving tech landscape. Nonprofits like Marcy Lab School gained recognition for bridging the tech gap in NYC.
In September, the White House announced an initiative to fill 500,000 roles by removing degree requirements and expanding apprenticeships. edX's bankruptcy restructuring was approved, and presidential candidates emphasized skills-based hiring.
October brought significant shifts in the OPM sector, with the U.S. Dept. of Education rescinding its controversial guidance. 2U appointed an interim CEO, and Eruditus secured $150M in funding.
In November, the House passed the Dole Act, which includes provisions for VET TEC funding for coding bootcamps. QuickStart acquired Promineo Tech, and Pursuit received a $2M grant for its new cybersecurity program.
In December, the Dole Act cleared the Senate (!), and the Dept. of Labor withdrew its apprenticeship updates proposal. edX closed its university bootcamps, leaving room for several competitors to fill the gap in the market!
